Three police officers have been attacked by a gang of up to 40 youths who pelted them with stones in what appears to have been an ambush.

One of the officers received facial injuries in the attack at Gennevilliers in Hauts-de-Seine on the outskirts of Paris on Tuesday night.

The injured policeman was transferred to Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, suffering from multiple cuts and bruises.

The attack occurred when the three officers went to investigate a fire on a work site.

While two of them got out of the car, the third remained in the vehicle which was then quickly surrounded by up to 40 youths throwing stones and bits of paving.

The two other police officers came to their colleague’s rescue but they too came under attack before the gang vanished into the night.

‘We found 50 bits of paving around the car which was completely destroyed,’ said a police source.

‘It was a real ambush.’

Two people found carrying containers of petrol were later arrested.
